Secret Recipe Club - Sesame Seed Cookies

I had great plans on my debut entry, recipe post for the Secret Recipe Club.   I was assigned Miz Helen's Country Cottage and had so much fun reading her recipes.    So I had one entry earmarked to make, but really when it's 80+ degrees outside, Green Chile Stew just doesn't sound that appetizing.  So then I decided on another recipe, but realized it would be a great recipe for our monthly Boat Club gathering which just so happens to fall on the 10th this month, and I didn't want to make it in advance of that.   So, to wind this long-winded dissertation up, I decided to indulge my sweet tooth this month.    And these Sesame Seed Cookies are just the ticket for that.

Sesame Seed Cookies

I had some fun with the recipe, I ended up having to add another 1/4 cup of flour because the dough was too soft, and even with the addition of the flour it was still too sticky to roll into balls.  I ended up using two spoons to scoop up enough for one cookie, then dumping

it into the bowl of sesame seeds, before being able to pick up the ball and roll it out.   And I only baked half the recipe, I rolled the other half of the dough in some plastic wrap and refrigerated it to firm it up.

All that being said, the cookies were good,

however next time, I think they will get some Fleur de Sel on top and I'll toast the sesame seeds, just a tad, before rolling the balls in the seed.   I also didn't bake the cookies as long as the recipe said to, at 17 minutes they were nicely browned and ready to come out of the oven.

Recipe:  Italian Sesame Seed Cookies                                        Oven Temperature 375 Degrees

1/2 cup salted butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 large egg
1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2  cup raw sesame seeds
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease one cookie sheet or line it with Silpat or a piece of Parchment paper.
Cream the butter and sugar together until well combined.  Add the vanilla and egg. Mix, them together and then add the flour and baking powder a little at a time until all the flour has been incorporated.
Place the sesame seeds in a small bowl and set  aside.
Form the dough into small balls and roll them into the Sesame seeds, then take out and flatten a little,  pressing gently down until you have a nice little flattened cookie, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter.    These cookies don't spread out, so they can be placed fairly close together.

Bake them for 15 to 18 minutes or until they are golden brown all over.

Cool them on the cookie sheet.   Then make a pot of tea or coffee and prepare to enjoy one of these crisp little cookies for a nice afternoon break.

  5. I wonder if you can make them gluten free? Maybe by using almond flour or another flour, hmmm, have to try that.
